Established in 2010 at the Marian Center for Non-Profits as part of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Vox Box is a black box theatre and my Milwaukee voice studio space.
This warm, welcoming, and colorful space (note my floor painting!) is a venue where I can teach and fulfill my mission of developing and promoting unheard “voices.” Up-and-coming performing talents, neglected works by established artists, new works by as-yet unknown composers and writers, and experienced actor-singers seeking space to experiment in new artistic directions will all be featured.
Our New Year’s Eve grand opening celebration, ”a STATUS soiree,” featured a musical revue of local performers that I directed, and STATUS, a new musical work by Brian Myers, a local composer and performer. STATUS will premiere in New York City at the Strawberry One Act Festival in February 2011.
The local cabaret duo MezzoPiano (mezzo Christine O’Meally and pianist/performer Ryan Capplemann) will present their melodramatic movie-star musings in their musical revue “Oh, to Be a Movie Star!” on February 20. “codadiva”, a tragicomedy by Liysa Callsen, premieres on March 26, 2011. Performed in American Sign Language with an interpreter, this one-woman show celebrating Liysa’s struggle to embrace her sometimes-isolating, currently liberating CODA (child of deaf adults) identity, will speak to both deaf and hearing audiences.
Other pieces currently in the works include a Mother’s Day performance on the subject of a famous female Wisconsin artist; a sultry summer night of sangria and South American music; a 9/11/11 memorial; “Cabaret Enchantee,” a recital of French song that I will perform; and a risque holiday evening featuring Santa’s reindeer in The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. But those are just the pieces that have emerged thus far; who knows what new and exciting voices will be heard next at the Vox Box? Artists are encouraged to contact me via this website to promote their work and make project proposals.
