    Checkmate!

Rehearsals for Chess at Soulstice Theatre begin this week! I’m so looking forward to playing the role of Florence.  The music, composed by the guys from ABBA, is a fantastic mix of pop and classical influences. The story: a love triangle inspired by the the very real political intrigues of Cold War-era chess matches. Show opens last week of July. Can’t wait! It’s gonna be great! This fall, I’ll be doing the role of Joan in the 9/11 drama The Guys with CodaDiva Productions.  More on that later.

Pink Banana Theatre Company’s One-Act Festival of new plays by local and national playwrights, “Sex, Drugs, & the American Way”, opens tonight at the Off Broadway theatre in downtown Milwaukee. As a featured playwright (my monologue Truck Stop is in the first act) I got a sneak peek at the show last night. It’s great! Funny, fast, and full of creative energy. Named one of the top five things to do in Milwaukee this weekend by Milwaukee Magazine columnist Paul Kosidowski. Jason and the Argonauts!
    Heroic Theatrics at Clinton Elementary

Last week, my teaching partner Danielle and I taught two stage-intensive sessions at our school, Clinton Elementary, to make sure the students would be ready for their upcoming dress rehearsals of this year’s student opera, “Jason and the Argonauts/Il Giasone”. Scheduling snafus, a complex multitude of costumes and props, and some good-old-fashioned stage fright in some of our star performers had us (and them) feeling a bit frazzled as we approached the culmination of our year-long residency at the school. . .

Congratulations to students Marielle Schuchardt, who will be performing with the Mill Street Singers in Plymouth, WI this summer, and also to Katie Phillips, who was cast in the lead role of Fiona in Sheboygan Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Brigadoon! Way to go, ladies!

My current acting endeavor, “It’s Your Mother!”, opens this week at the Boulevard Theatre in BayView. It’s a real privilege to be a part of this show! The two authors of this play, which premiered in New York in 2009, will be present at some of the performances. I’m playing several different mothers. Take a look at this Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article for information about tickets, show times, and some “maternal”  history.

I am a Teaching Artist in residence at two schools in Chicago for Chicago Opera Theatre. My colleagues and I team-teach students in grades 4-7. Through our lesson plans, students prepare their own version of an opera while also meeting Illinois learning standards. It’s tough sometimes, but I love it.  Here’s a link to my latest blog on that work: http://chicagooperatheater.typepad.com/education/2010/03/lisa-golda-teaching-artist-at-von-humboldt-elementary–this-week-students-at-von-humboldt-had-a-special-treat-cape-chicag.html
