A two-part article I wrote on the Estill vocal method was recently published in the national singers’ periodical Classical Singer magazine. My first article with them–a review of a Portland Opera production–appeared in 2001. I’ve heard from many singers regarding the Estill method, a non-biased approach to singing that helps singers to isolate the various parts of the vocal instrument and what aural variables those parts affect, then teaches ”recipes” that combine those parts for sound qualities such as the belt, opera, and more. I am attending the five-day introductory seminar again in its entirety this October in Point Loma, San Diego, can’t wait!

Chicago Opera Theatre and CAPE!
Posted in: News
Check out this colorful documentation of last year’s Opera for All collaboration with several Chicago schools! You’ll see pics of our wonderful students in dramatic action, wearing costumes that I designed and created for our production of Jason and the Golden Fleece, based on the Baroque opera Il Giasone. This site is produced with the help of CAPE, Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, who worked with us in the classroom this year to provide instruction in non-musical artistic disciplines such as recording technology, drama, scenic design, and props.

CHESS at Soulstice Theatre!
Posted in: News, Performance
“What a scene, what a joy, what a lovely sight! When my game is the big sensation!” from CHESS
Soulstice Theatre’s production of CHESS, in which I am playing Florence Vassy, opens this weekend! Love, loss, and 1960s-era espionage take center stage as the three main players (Freddie Trumper, American challenger for the world chess champion title; Anatoly Sergievsky, the somewhat reluctant Russian world champion; and Florence Vassy, Trumper’s second and Sergievsky’s eventual lover) struggle to overcome the political and personal limits that doom their happiness from the very start.
The talent represented in this ensemble cast—musical, vocal, and dramatic—cannot be overstated and I am so incredibly proud to be a part of it. The score (composed by the guys from 1980s pop supergroup ABBA) ranges from sweet lyricism to pulsating retro pop. Don’t miss what will be one of the finest musical theatre performances this summer in Milwaukee! For more information, or to reserve tickets, visit http://www.soulsticetheatre.org/index.php. Show runs Fridays-Saturdays July 29 through August 14.

Pink Banana Theatre Company’s One-Act Festival of new plays by local and national playwrights, “Sex, Drugs, & the American Way”, opens tonight at the Off Broadway theatre in downtown Milwaukee. As a featured playwright (my monologue Truck Stop is in the first act) I got a sneak peek at the show last night. It’s great! Funny, fast, and full of creative energy. Named one of the top five things to do in Milwaukee this weekend by Milwaukee Magazine columnist Paul Kosidowski.
